SUMMARY

Throughout the area near Murells Inlet, South Carolina, the story of Alice Flagg is well known. The tragic tale of the ill-fated love between a fifteen-year-old planter's daughter and a common lumberman has become legend across the state. In order to end Alice's unacceptable affair, Alice's brother, the acting head of the Flagg family, shipped her off to boarding school in Charleston. Soon after she arrived, Alice contracted a fatal disease and had to return home to the Hermitage. She soon lapsed into a coma and died in 1849. Legend states that during her burial, Alice's brother discovered a ring strung around her neck on a ribbon, and angrily tore the ring off and threw it into the marsh in scorn for the forbidden love between Alice and the lumberman. Alice Flagg: The Ghost of the Hermitage tells the story of the star-crossed lovers and documents the strange story of Alice's afterlife. Numerous sightings have been reported of a young girl, barefoot and dressed in what seems to be a wedding gown, wandering around the area, seemingly looking for her lost ring. Although she died more than 150 years ago, unnerving experiences with this despondent ghost still occur.Rhyne, Nancy is the author of 'Alice Flag The Ghost of the Hermitage', published 2004 under ISBN 9781589802698 and ISBN 1589802691.
