In the past 20 years air quality has generally been improving throughout much of the U.S. However, there is growing concern about visibility, air quality, & certain respiratory illnesses in & near Great Smoky Mountains Nat. Park on the North Carolina-TN border. In light of these concerns about the park & adjacent areas, this report analyzes recent trends in & contributing factors to (1) visibility impairments, (2) ground-level ozone, & (3) respiratory illnesses. In addition, it examines the TVA's plans to reduce its emissions of regulated pollutants from generating electricity. The review focused on the period from 1990 to 1999.
