This survey, illus. with numerous maps & graphs, shows that in 2004: opium poppy cultivation increased 64% in Afghanistan, with potential opium prod. est. at 4,200 metric tons (+17%); 356,000 families were involved in opium poppy cultivation (compared with 264,000 in 2003); est. farmers' per capital gross income from opium was down 64%, but still 12 times higher than from wheat; total farm-gate value of opium decreased 41% to US$600 mill.; & the value of opiates exports to neighboring countries increased to US$2.8 billion.
