Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Erwin is well known as an educator and musician with exceptional artistic skills as a pianist, organist, composer and conductor. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, New York City, where he served on the faculty. Further study at Union Theological Seminary in New York and The Royal School of Church Music in London helped broaden his perspectives. Later he served as chair of the Music Department and Dean of the Faculty at the Dwight School in Englewood, New Jersey.
